CMESS works in the Garden

The whole school came out to the garden to work on the school bed.  They dug potatoes (3 boxes full!), picked blackberries (with the understanding that at some point blackberry crumble would be on the Breakfast Club menu), gathered seeds for next year, harvested herbs for drying for seasoning and tea, cut back tough weeds and brambles, and moved around some compost.  I've said it before, we have the best kids in BC.  They worked in the hot sun cheerfully alongside their teachers and aides, and everyone enjoyed the zucchini chips, beet chips, kale chips, and cucumber slices that Traci brought for snacks.  She led the group through the work making it fun and interesting for everyone.

Traci's veggies

Our lush garden, check out the height on the sunflowers!

The cob oven is getting an addition, a doorway hood.

The school kids

They dug right in, literally.

One of the special things about a K-12 school is that all the kids work together and look out for each other, even with vast age differences.  Here's a team that\s a grade 2 and a grade 12.

Snack time

Percy and his human Juanita happened to visit the garden at the same time as the children, and Percy was SO HAPPY to see everyone.

The Garden in July

So many successful gardeners growing interesting delicious foods this year!

Flowers in July

We are fortunate in Tahsis to have such lovely flowers in and around our garden.  The colours and fragrances are quite the draw for gardeners and bees.  (and photographers!)

Green House in July

The Greenhouse is bursting with all kinds of plants, what a great first year for our greenhouse beds!  The bees are pollinating everything, including cukes and 8 ft. high tomato plants.  Kim put in some melons, so we'll see if they like our greenhouse too!
