Kale Joke

Because I like kale, this article makes me laugh.

World Health Organisation Warns That Consumption Of Kale Leads To Arrogance

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has released a new report today warning that consumption of the ‘super-food’ kale over a period of time can lead consumers to have heightened levels of arrogance.
The study was conducted in several cafes in Sydney’s beach-side suburb of Bondi and also its inner-city suburb of Newton where kale consumption is almost at epidemic levels.
A spokesperson for the WHO told The (un)Australian: “These findings though alarming are not surprising, I mean we’ve all been at a dinner party and had to endure the whining of a vegetarian or worse a vegan, talking about how superior they are to us carnivores.
“Until recently they merely whined, now with the introduction of kale and to a lesser extent quinoa their whining is now more boastful and confrontational.”
Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce is currently considering legislation to confront the kale epidemic and has not ruled out making the consumption of red meat compulsory for all Australians.
Upon hearing of the news of compulsory red meat consumption, a number of petitions appeared on the websitewww.change.org calling for kale to replace the Australian flag.

Tahsis Days Silent Auction

Our Tahsis Community Garden Society donated a great prize this year:

Congratulations to June, who had the winning bid.  We hope you enjoy your herbs!

Tahsis Days 2015 Slugfest

There's always great snacks at the garden!  Thanks to the Village of Tahsis for the leftover zucchini from the zucchini races.  They were used as kabob holders for the fruit, then taken home by a visitor to fry up!

Alice, Ellen and Agatha, we were so glad to see our old friends again!  Agatha was our very first gardener when the raised beds were built in 2010.  Alice has done a lot of work at the community garden in Zeballos.

Gale Bates and one of her many interesting displays

Our garden enjoyed a visit from Gayle Bates, Comox Strathcona Waste Management Contract Waste Reduction Educator!  Gayle was fun and engaging, and spoke to us about recycling, waste reduction, composting and more!  She shared tons of prizes and words of wisdom and encouragement.

Grace

Karma had fun following a scavenger hunt devised by Marion Howell, here she had found "something orange".

Jude and Gayle

It was so hot, thankfully there was plenty of ice cold lemonade for everyone.  Thanks to the Olsons for lending us your dispenser, and thanks to CMESS for lending us the cups so we could continue to be "trash free" in the garden.

Our special honorary slug destroyer Dudley came for a visit with his human, Juanita

Graham and Karma check out the plum tree that was planted when Karma was born.

Jan won the draw, a great market basket!

Ellen

Gayle brought lots of crafting fun for everyone

One important fact about our 4th annual Slugfest.  There was not one slug to be found ANYWHERE!  It has just been too hot and dry.  Caleb, who was our grand champion at our 1st slugfest was really hoping to find one, but he had no luck.  The only slug to be seen was this wonderful knitted slug, made by the talented knitter Janet Kirsop.  Andrea won him in the draw.

Starting to Work with the Chips

Thanks to Terry for starting the job yesterday with several feet done, and thanks to Stephanie, Aubrey, Kim, Kieren, Gareth and Karli for this morning putting in a good hour of labour to get the chips spread around our perimeter!  We still have a way to go, but this is a great start!

Thanks and raspberries

MANY thanks to Terry, our neighbour in the trailer court, who wrapped the garden hose onto another roller that actually works.

The raspberry bushes, that belong to everyone, have berries ready to pick. Help yourself to a cup or so. They are planted just behind the fire pit area.

Meeting Time Change

Normally we have our garden meetings on the 25th of each month, but this time we are delaying to accomodate as many people as possible... our next Community Garden meeting is on July 5th at 7 pm at the garden.  Hope to see everyone there!  If you want to add anything to the agenda beforehand, please contact Stephanie.  Thanks!

June So Far

We have had unseasonably hot dry weather and the garden is taking off!  I have seen tiny green tomatoes, tons of blossoms of all different kinds of fruits and vegetables and the place is just humming with bees.
